H. Pylori Breath Test
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that can infect the lining of the stomach and cause inflammation (gastritis). H. pylori infection is a common cause of stomach ulcers and can also increase the risk of developing stomach cancer.
A H. pylori breath test is a non-invasive test that is used to detect the presence of H. pylori bacteria in the stomach. During the test, the patient is asked to drink a solution containing a small amount of radioactive carbon. The patient will then be asked to exhale into a bag, and the exhaled air will be tested for the presence of the radioactive carbon. If the radioactive carbon is detected in the exhaled air, it is a sign that H. pylori bacteria are present in the stomach.
H. pylori breath testing is an important tool in the evaluation of a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, heartburn, and indigestion. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for H. pylori infection.
It is important to see your gastroenterologist for proper evaluation and treatment if you are experiencing symptoms that may be related to H. pylori infection. Your gastroenterologist will be able to determine if a H. pylori breath test is necessary and provide you with more information on the procedure.
