Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

The main difference between a flexible sigmoidoscopy and a colonoscopy is the extent of the examination. A flexible sigmoidoscopy only allows the healthcare provider to examine the lower part of the colon, while a colonoscopy allows for examination of the entire colon. A colonoscopy is generally considered a more comprehensive test, as it allows the healthcare provider to visualize the entire colon and can detect abnormalities throughout the entire colon. However, a flexible sigmoidoscopy may be recommended in certain situations, such as when there is a lower risk of colon abnormalities or if the patient is unable to undergo a colonoscopy.
