Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows a gastroenterologist to examine the inside of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope is inserted into the rectum and advanced through the colon. The colonoscope has a light and a camera on the end, which allows the gastroenterologist to view the inside of the colon and take pictures or biopsies (small tissue samples) if necessary.
Colonoscopy is an important tool in the evaluation of a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, and rectal bleeding. It can also be used to detect and remove colon polyps, which are small growths on the inner lining of the colon that can potentially turn into cancer. Colonoscopy is one of the most effective methods for detecting colon cancer early, when it is most treatable.
To prepare for a colonoscopy, you will be given specific instructions on how to clean out your colon. This typically involves taking a special solution to drink and following a clear liquid diet for a certain period of time before the procedure. You may also be asked to stop taking certain medications or to take medications to prepare the digestive tract for the procedure.
It is important to see your gastroenterologist for proper evaluation and treatment if you are experiencing symptoms that may require a colonoscopy. Your gastroenterologist will be able to determine if a colonoscopy is necessary and provide you with more information on the procedure.
